Show Details Shared Note: - We are beginning to learn more about the part of John Fry's family that moved from the farm in Portage County, as well as those who stayed close by. The breakthrough happened when I found the 1838 Enumeration of School Children in Portage County just last Thursday (1/17/13) in the historical section of the Akron Public Library. Three new children were added to John and Ann's family: John, Susana and Sarah. See Media (to be added soon). That shed new light on the 1850 and 1860 Census, as well as other information we already had.

The 1850 Census shows an entry for Wierman Fry ‏(the oldest son of John and Ann)‏, with his growing family.

John Fry's widow, Ann Fry, was also still in Ohio at the time of the 1850 Census. Three children are in her household: Susanna, John M. and Sarah A. We now know that she moved west to Indiana sometime between 1850 and 1857 with her daughter Sarah Ann Fry and son James Porter Fry. Also in the 1850 Census, Cannon Collins is shown in Elkhart, Indiana. His son, Joshua J. Collins would soon marry Sarah A. Fry in Starke County, Indiana June 3, 1857.

In the 1860 Census, both Ann and Sarah A. are listed in the household of Joshua J. Collins. Also in the household was son, Orlando M. Collins. Interestingly, in the census of 1860, 1870 and 1900, Joshua lists his place of birth as Ohio. He is listed as born in Delaware in the 1850 and 1880 Census.

James P‏(orter)‏ Fry is listed on the same page of the 1860 Census as Ann Fry, Joshua, and Sarah Collins, and is married to Mahala Collins, Joshua J. Collin's younger sister. James P. Fry was among the first County Commissioners of Stark County. He later moved to Marshall Township, Clark County Illinois. He, Mahala and Sarah Ann Fry ‏(age 22)‏ are said to have died in the Chicago Smallpox Epidemic in 1882.

Oliver Perry Fry remained in Ohio, living in Randolph Township, Portage County in 1850, then moving to Independence Township, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, by 1860. He moved to Dolson Township, Clark County, Illinois before 1870. Joining him in Dolson Township sometime between 1870 and 1880 was his nephew, John W. Fry, shown on the same page of the 1880 Census.

Ann's son, John M. Fry, moved to Deerfield Township, Portage County, and was first a teacher, then a physician. Two sons, Royce Day Fry and John Morris Fry were also physicians in Cleveland, Ohio.

I have mapped a complicated series of moves for the family. The family stayed together or moved as a family grouping, traveling together, or joining later. More research will be conducted. I also need to upload the wealth of new information which supports all of the conclusions set forth above.
