Poem Rock

"Steven B. Smith is founder of the underground zine 'ArtCrimes.' [He is] an outspoken poet and inveterate artist [whose] transgressive art works [are] collected by renegade art enthusiasts and mainstream corporations alike. His magnetic style has extended to the web with his Agent of Chaos site, featuring an impressive archive of his art and poetry" Tisha Nemeth, senior editor. Cool Cleveland 1/7-14, 2004. Amy Sparks observed: "If Cleveland ever celebrates its eccentrics, Steven B. Smith will be in the top five." "Surreal Thing: Eccentric Artist and Collector Steve Smith Bares All," FreeTimes. March 15, 2000.

Peter Conklin Ball has been making music on synthesizers for over twenty-five years, writing and recording, playing and singing on countless original songs. Some of his musical highlights include playing giant raves; throwing rock concerts on the high bluffs overlooking Lake Erie; and opening a show for Dr. Timothy Leary. Although Ball has recorded dozens of albums with his band Apartment One, none have ever been released. He is almost totally underground and unknown. He knows that the music business can be a bitter mistress. Still, he carries on. In the meantime, he is having a good laugh at his website: Ball and All.com.

These two icons of Cleveland's underground art scene - one excelling in art and poetry, the other in music and performance - have finally gotten together.

According to Smith's account: "Peter’s been urging me to record for 20 years.  In January 2004, in my 2nd year of no employment benefits, I gave it a try – to my great dismay.  Took 6 months for me to loosen up enough to start making a serious fool of myself; but that is when the fun began.

I write the words -- take them to Peter. Peter's place is floor to ceiling keyboards, theremins, synthesizers, microphones – all run thru his computer for recording. He starts playing music, not knowing what I’m going to say, and I start saying, not knowing what he’s going to play.  When done, he burns me a cd of the day’s jam. For one time thru unrehearsed impromptu jams, we do okay.

"Side benefits – my public poetry reading style has improved from boring to enthusiastic; and I’ve written 10 times more poems than before, just to feed the music machine."

Dung or Diamond?
 by Steven B. Smith

On my lack of fame and fortune,
I keep baiting the stream
But nobody bites.
As for peace and understanding,
I chase the spirit
I follow the sprite.

Very Strange
 by Peter C. Ball

Vision of an immediate soul,
Eye to eye was here.
It was real, I suppose,
Light flashing in the mirror.
The image I saw,
Reflection of a man,
Although I don't suppose
I'll ever understand.
It's strange, but I know
I'll see you again.
I'll see you again, my friend,
See you again
(Very strange)
