Epilogue

Walter Logan Fry left Liberia in January, 1936, after completing his two year contract. He closed out his work at the Bank of Monrovia; arranged for the shipment of his small collection of art and artifacts back to Akron, Ohio in several large sea trunks; and set off for a short tour through Europe.

He did, as he had hoped, travel to Paris, where he visited the Folies, among other places of interest; then was off to Germany. He told me he heard Adolf Hitler harangue at a large rally in Munich. It was, he said, one of the most frightening experiences of his life. The crowd acted as if of a single mind and single voice.

He then made a short trip to Norway.

We rarely ask our parents about their experiences during their lifetime; and the memory expires. Fortunately, we have these letters; which, together with the photographs and artifacts, gives a rich view of Liberia in the mid-1930s; and an insight into Father's life and work in an exotic, unspoiled land far away.
